Chinese Appliance Makers Shift from "Product Exports" to "Localized Solutions" in Europe

发布日期:2026-09-03 09:07:06   点击量:17次
Beyond building factories in Southeast Asia, Chinese home appliance companies are making significant inroads in developed markets—particularly Europe—by pivoting from price-based competition to localized product innovation.
        Solving Europe's Installation Nightmare
One of the biggest barriers for European consumers buying air conditioners has always been installation. In Germany, France, the UK and Spain, installation fees can reach €1,000 to €2,000, with wait times of two weeks or more during peak seasons. Many older apartments and protected historical buildings prohibit external wall drilling or outdoor unit installation.
Chinese manufacturers have turned this constraint into a competitive advantage. Midea developed the PortaSplit series—a lightweight, portable split air conditioner weighing just 10kg that requires no permanent installation and can be moved when renting. The product was developed over three years by a joint team of local European and Chinese R&D staff. This year, To B sales of the PortaSplit series exceeded 200,000 units—doubling year-on-year.
         Shifting Perceptions Beyond OEM
Historically, European consumers viewed Chinese appliance brands primarily as OEM manufacturers. Innovative, locally-tailored products like the PortaSplit are beginning to reshape that perception. Midea's Europe director noted that this demonstrates Chinese companies are not just capable of manufacturing, but of innovating and developing products specifically adapted to local market needs.
         Broader Market Momentum
The European push is paying off across the board. Haier's European HVAC business grew more than 20% year-on-year, with its own-brand segment up 23%. Home air conditioner sales grew 13%, while the own-brand segment saw 24% growth. The broader trend extends to other products like heat pumps and washing machines, where Chinese brands have been gaining share with energy-efficient and smart features tailored to European standards.
         The Big Picture
Together with factory buildouts in Thailand and Egypt, the European market push reflects a three-pronged strategy: Southeast Asia as a regional manufacturing hub serving global markets, Egypt as a gateway to the Middle East and Africa, and Europe as a proving ground for premium, innovation-led brand building.
For international partners, the implication is clear: Chinese appliance makers are no longer just low-cost suppliers—they are becoming global competitors capable of developing region-specific products, building local manufacturing networks, and competing on innovation rather than price.
European success stories like Midea's PortaSplit demonstrate that Chinese companies can move beyond the "cheap and functional" stereotype. When paired with manufacturing footprints in Thailand and Egypt, this three-pronged strategy offers international partners a compelling value proposition: shorter supply chains for Southeast Asian markets, tariff-advantaged access to the Middle East and Africa via Egypt, and premium innovation-led products for developed markets.
The question for international buyers and distributors is no longer whether to source from China, but how to partner with a new breed of Chinese manufacturers that are building regional ecosystems, tailoring products to local conditions, and investing in brand equity. The Chinese appliance industry is not just exporting products anymore—it is exporting capabilities, and that changes everything.
